LA TROUPE FOLKLORIQUE GRECQUE “SYRTAKI”
NORTH AMERICAN DANCES CONFERENCES
(1993, 1994, 1997, 1998)

In 1993, 1994, 1997 & 1998, La Troupe Folklorique Grecque “Syrtaki” organized its North American Dance Conferences in Montreal, which were attended by a number of dance troupes from across Canada and the United States.

Brief Information of the Four Conferences:

The First North American Dance Conference was held in Montreal on May 28th to 31st 1993 at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel. LaTroupe Folklorique Grecque Syratiki was proud to present the following instructors:

  1. Dimitrios & Anastasia Tzotzis – Leading authorities on Macedonian and Thracian dances. Their workshops focused on the areas on Macedonia and Thrace. 
     
  2. The late Paul Ginis – Folk reearcher, founder and director of the Greek American Folklore Society from New York. His workshops focused on the authentic regional styles of the islands.
     
  3. Tassos Papadopoulos – Director and instructor of the Efxinos Pontos Association of Montreal. His workshops focused on Pontic dances with emphasis on their unique style. 
     
  4. Theodoros Serganis - Original founder of LaTroupe from Montreal, a graduate and former dancer of Likeion Ellinidon of Athens. His workshops were focused to dance instructors focusing on teaching techniques of Greek folkdance instruction.

The Second North American Dance Conference was held in Montreal on May 27th to 30th 1994 at Holiday Inn Hotel. LaTroupe Folklorique Grecque Syratiki was proud to presentthe following instructors:

  1. Nelly Dimoglou – Founder and director of the Nelly Dimoglou Dance Theater in Rhodes, Greece. Her workshops focused on the regions of Crete, Cyprus and the Dodecanese Islands.
     
  2. Dimitrios Tzotzis – Leading authority on Macedonian and Thracian dances. His workshops focused on mainland dances with emphasis on Macedonia and will be concentrating on the character of the steps and styles of the respective regions. 
     
  3. Nancy Harmanta – Assistant director of Likeion Ellinidon of Athens. Her workshops focused on dances from the regions of Thrace, Anatoliki Romilia and Asia Minor.
     
  4. George Kotsos – Assistant director of Likeion Ellinidon of Athens. His workshops focused on dances from the regions of Thrace, Anatoliki Romilia and Asia Minor.

The Third North American Dance Conference was held in Montreal on May 23rd to 26th 1997 at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel. LaTroupe Folklorique Grecque Syrtaki was proud to present the following instructors: 

  1. Christos Mantzoukas – Professor of Physical Education at the University of Athens. He has conducted several researches and studies on Greek Dances from various regions. His workshops focused on the regions of Iraklia Serron, Flambouro Serron and the Aegean Islands.
     
  2. Giannis Konstantinou – Graduate of the Pedagogical Academy of Athens. He has studied and researched several regions of Greece but mainly of the region of Macedonia. His seminars focused on the region of Macedonia. 
     
  3. Constantinos Samaras - Graduate of the Academy of Physical Education of Athens. He has studied and researched many topics and aspects of our heritage on Greek Folk Dances. His workshops focused on the region of Thessaly. 
     
  4. Dimitrios Tzotzis – Leading authority on Macedonian and Thracian dances. His workshops focused on various mainland regions of Greece.
     
  5. George Kalomiris – Folk dance researcher and instructor. He is a graduate of The Academy of Physical Education of Athens and an assistant professor at the University of Athens. His workshops focused on the instruction of Greek traditional dances to children of pre-school and of school ages.
     
  6. Dionysios Pollatos – Graduate of the National Conservatory and the Conservatory of Athens. His workshops focused on the understanding of tradional music and its connection to tradional dance.

The Fourth North American Dance Conference was held in Montreal on October 9th to the 12th 1998 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel. Latroupe Folklorique Grecque Syratiki was proud to present the following instructors:

  1. Nancy Harmanta – Graduate of the SuperiorDance Company “Rallou Manou”. She is a dancer and an assistant director of Likeion Ellinidon of Athens. Her workshops focused on dances from Sili – Ikonio, Propontida – Marmaras (Asia Minor), dances from the villages of Volakas, Kali Vrissi, Monastiraki and Petroussa of Drama (Macedonia), the Ionian islands of Lefkada, Cephalonia and Kerkyra (Eptanisa).
     
  2. George Kotsos – Assistant director of Likeion Ellinidon of Athens since 1989 and a member of Likeion since 1972. His workshops focused on dances from Sili – Ikonio, Propontida – Marmaras (Asia Minor), dances from the villages of Volakas, Kali Vrissi, Monastiraki and Petroussa of Drama (Macedonia), the Ionian islands of Lefkada, Cephalonia and Kerkyra (Eptanisa).
     
  3. Nikos Zournatzidis – a folk dance researcher and instructor of the Pontian dances and heritage. His workshops if dances from Matsoukas – Trapezountas, Kars, Argyroupoli, Ag-Dag-Manten, Sampsountas, Kioumous Manten and Nikopolis (Pontus).
     
  4. Dimitrios Tzotzis – Leading authority on Macedonian and Thracian dances. His workshops focused on dances from Metsovo (Epirus), Vlasti – Kozani, Samarina and Vamvakofito (Macedonia).
